On National Lion and Sun Day, I attended an event in Copenhagen as both a speaker and a panelist alongside Maziar Ghavidel and Fourough Canani. My speech focused on the Lion and Sun as a symbol of Iranian identity, national sovereignty, and the struggle to reclaim Iran. The day is observed on June 16 because it is the birthday of Majidreza Rahnavard — the young protester from Mashhad who was executed by the Islamic Republic after the 2022 protests. Majidreza had the Lion and Sun tattooed on his arm; that same arm which was crushed by regime agents before his execution. For many Iranians, he has become a symbol of courage, resistance, and a generation that refuses to let Iran’s national identity be erased.
